The Frosty Goat – Freeze-dried Foods

The Frosty Goat – A Family’s Journey in Freeze-Drying

The Frosty Goat is more than just a business—it’s a labor of love, run by three strong, determined women: my sister Kayla, my mom Sherri, and me, Melissa with support from Garry (our stepdad). We are a true family operation, each bringing our unique strengths to the table while supporting each other through challenges.

Kayla is our creative powerhouse—she designs our graphics, posters, and anything crafty. She’s also our smoothie queen, always whipping up delicious new flavors. My mom, Sherri, is the heart of our business. She runs a no-till, chemical-free garden, providing us with fresh ingredients while also being the kindest, hardest-working person we know. As a former nurse, doula, and community support person, she has a wealth of experience, especially with children. She leads our Kid Nibblers product line, using her expertise from raising a big family. And then there’s me—Melissa. I handle the accounting, purchasing, scheduling, and all the administrative work that keeps us running smoothly. My background as a military supply technician, receptionist, and business graduate helps me keep everything organized. I also make our soups from scratch, using homemade stock and as many locally sourced ingredients as possible.

We all share a passion for feeding people, helping others, and making our customers smile. But we’ve had our share of struggles. My sister has rheumatoid arthritis, I have health issues from my time in the military, and all three of us face mental health challenges. Yet, together, we are strong. We balance each other’s strengths, lift each other up, and push through every obstacle.

The Frosty Goat started as a simple business plan for a college assignment. I had seen videos on freeze-drying and was intrigued—at first, I just thought it would be a great way to preserve my mom’s garden harvest. But soon, we realized the potential. We are committed to sustainability, striving for zero waste. Every part of our fruits and vegetables gets used—scraps go into soup stocks, to the farm animals (especially our goats and sheep), or into the compost bin for the garden. The name The Frosty Goat is a tribute to the farm and our love for animals. Kayla even designed our logo with all of our input.

Looking ahead, our dream is to make nutritious food more accessible. We want to provide low-cost or free freeze-dried fruits and vegetables to those in need, especially in food-scarce areas like Northern Canada, where grocery prices are incredibly high. Freeze-dried food retains about 97% of its nutrients, tastes fresh, and is lightweight—making it a perfect solution for these communities. We also want to support local people who are struggling in our community, ensuring that healthy, nutrient-rich food is available to those who need it most.

We are incredibly proud of how far we’ve come since launching in June 2024. We’ve seen amazing success, selling online, in stores, and at trade shows, craft fairs, and farmers’ markets. But we know this is just the beginning. Our goal is to keep growing so we can reach more people and make a real difference. We understand struggle, and we want to help lift others up. With innovation, determination, and a whole lot of heart, we believe we can make that happen.
